What is it?

Showdown Morrow or Shomo, is a 2-day event where students, speakers and stakeholders come together to learn about and create a sustainable tomorrow.

Shomo is an ideathon that brings elements from hackathons, the festival scene as well as the academic world. Art, music and food will make Shomo unforgettable together with expert talks. This is a place where students from different academic fields can participate in discussions about sustainable development, but also get to know each other and have fun! Oh, and one more thing: it will cost you absolutely nothing.

The first Shomo event was planned to take place in March 2020. The partners and challenges were ready, the participants were chosen and the teams were made. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the event was cancelled (March 13, 2020) only one week before it would have taken place.

This year's event will be held 7-8.5.2022. The registration will open April 4th, so stay tuned!

Where and when?

The event will be held 7-8.5.2022 and the application will open in the beginning of April 2022. The location for the event is Startup Sauna in Otaniemi, Espoo. Online participation will be an option.

Who can apply to Showdown Morrow?

Applying to Shomo requires that you have turned eighteen, and that you are enrolled or just graduated from a higher educational institution (either a university or university of applied sciences) in Finland. (Exception to this rule if you already were accepted in 2020.)
Since the event is intended for all students, the official language is English. Therefore, you have to be prepared to communicate in English during the festival, in order to make yourself understood in a team that potentially consists of students with another first language than your own. In your application, however, you can use either English, Swedish or Finnish. We welcome and encourage students from all faculties and with all kinds of majors and specialities! No former experience or qualifications in this field is needed.

How do I apply?

The application for Showdown Morrow 2022 has not opened yet. An application form will be published on our website when the application process starts. To get news about the application, we recommend that you follow us on Instagram or Facebook!

I got accepted as a participant in Showdown Morrow 2020. Do I have to reapply to participate in the 2022 event?

This is the letter we sent out to our participants when the event was cancelled in March 2020.

Dear participants,

After careful consideration we have decided to postpone Showdown Morrow due to the governments recommendations about COVID-19. We know that the recommendations regarding cancellations of events are only for events with more than 500 people (which would not be the case with Showdown Morrow), but we still think that the event is an unnecessary risk to take at this point.

We've been looking forward to this for more than a year, so goes without saying that we wouldn't do this if we didn't have to. We're so grateful for all of you who would've made this happen if it wouldn't be for this crisis.
However, we see this as a setback and not a defeat. We are hoping to be able to host the event later this year. When we have a new date for the event, we will ask you to confirm your application again. Since your application was already screened and accepted, you obviously don’t have to apply again. We will only need you to confirm your attendance for the new dates. We will update you when we know more about the situation!

We are so sorry for any potential problems this cancellation may cause. Take care of yourselves and we hope to get to meet you later this year!

Best regards,
The Showdown Morrow Team
No need to worry if you're not a student anymore. We will make an exception for those who already got accepted to the 2020 event.

When do I know if I got a spot?

We will send out a confirmation email to all who got a spot as soon as possible after the application closes. Keep in mind that our team has to go through all the applications. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

How are the teams created?

We want to show you that you can make an impact, so we will create teams according to your field of study and put your team in a suitable challenge. This is a unique way to meet people! If you wish to participate with one or more friends, write their name(s) in the application form. Each team has 3-4 members in total.

Do I need any prior knowledge on sustainability?

No! Shomo is suitable for all students in all majors. This is a safe space to learn new things or to develop your earlier knowledge.

Can high school (fi. lukio, sv. gymnasium) students apply?

High school students are unfortunately not able to apply to Shomo.

Does participation in Showdown Morrow cost?

No, Shomo is free for participants!

Can participants come and go during the event?

Yes, after registering on Saturday morning you may move in and out as you wish. We recommend staying for the entire time, but you make your own experience!

What is pitching and do I have to pitch?

Pitching is basically selling your solution to the company representatives by presenting it in a short amount of time. At Shomo the pitching is very laid-back, so you do not have to stand on stage and if you want you can ask other team members to do the talking.

Who is organizing Showdown Morrow?

We are a group of students who are all part of AaltoES (Aalto Entrepreneurship Society). Our fields of study vary from law, art and marketing to business, engineering and sociology. We go to different universities and schools of applied sciences, check us out under “Teams”!
